How to blur part of a video on iPhone
Neither Photos nor iMovie can blur part of a video, and almost nothing stays still for a whole clip, so you need an editor whose blur follows what it hides. In Talk it is free: select the clip, open Masking → Tap to Blur, pause where the thing shows and tap it — a face, a number plate, a screen, an address. Talk works out what you tapped, follows it through the clip on the device, and hides it with Blur, Pixelate or Black Out, in the preview and in the export. Where it loses track, another tap picks it up.
The steps
- Open Tap to Blur Select the clip, open Masking and choose Tap to Blur, then Tap on the Video. Regions belong to the clip, so something that appears in three clips is tapped in each.
- Pause where it shows clearly, and tap it Pick a frame where the thing is sharp and fully in view, not one where it is entering or blurred by movement. Talk decides what you tapped: a face, a line of text such as a plate, a sign or a screen, an object, or, failing those, an area around your finger. “Following it…” counts up as it works through the clip.
- Choose Blur, Pixelate or Black Out Blur and Pixelate suit faces and backgrounds. For anything that must not be read — a number plate, an account number, a password on a screen — choose Black Out (below, why).
- Check where it was lost Each region in the list says “Followed for the whole clip”, “Followed from 2 s to 9 s” or “Hidden in place for the whole clip”. Where it stopped, it stays hidden up to that point. Scrub there: if the thing still shows, tap it again and a new region carries on.
- Export Hidden parts stay hidden in the export, and each region is one undo step, saved with the project. Free exports are 1080p with no watermark.
What it can follow, and what to check
| Text: plates, signs, screens | Found as a line of text and followed as the car, the paper or the camera moves. Check the frames where it turns side-on or passes behind something: that is where tracking ends. |
|---|---|
| A face | Followed as the head moves. To hide every face in a clip at once, use Face Blur instead; Tap to Blur is for one face, or the face Face Blur missed. |
| An object | A logo on a shirt, a parcel label, a badge: anything with a clear outline against what is behind it. |
| An area | When what you tapped is none of those, Talk hides a circle around your finger and follows the picture there. |
| Can’t be followed | It is hidden where you tapped for the whole clip. That is right on a tripod shot and wrong if the camera moves, so watch the clip through. |
The regions keep to the footage, not to the screen: trim the clip, split it, speed it up, reverse it, mirror it or reframe it to 9:16, and what you hid stays hidden in the same place. The timeline’s thumbnails, the project’s cover and anything sent to AI Video from the clip hide it as well.
Blur, Pixelate or Black Out
A blur that looks unreadable isn’t always unrecoverable. Pixelation turns each block of a letter into its average colour, and because a given font at a given size always averages the same way, software has more than once worked pixelated text back out by trying candidates until the blocks match. A blur leaks less, but a light one can still be read by someone who knows what the plate or the name might be.
| Black Out | Nothing left to recover. Use it for number plates, account and card numbers, addresses, passwords and documents. |
|---|---|
| Pixelate | Reads instantly as deliberate anonymisation. Fine for a face or a logo; not for short text. |
| Blur | The softest on screen, for a face or a background detail where the look matters more than certainty. |

Frequently asked questions
Can you blur part of a video on iPhone without an app?
No. Neither the Photos app nor iMovie has a blur tool for part of a video. You need an editor that can blur one area and move it with the subject, such as Talk, which does it free, or CapCut, where you move the blur by hand with keyframes.
How do I blur a number plate in a video on iPhone?
In Talk, open Masking, choose Tap to Blur, pause where the plate is clear and tap it. Talk reads it as a line of text and follows it as the car or the camera moves. Choose Black Out rather than Blur, then check the moments where the car turns or passes behind something.
Will the blur follow something that moves?
Yes, in Talk. It follows what you tapped through the clip with Apple’s Vision framework on the device. If it loses track, the region stays hidden up to that point and the list says where it stopped; a tap where the thing still shows adds another region. Something it can’t follow at all is hidden where you tapped for the whole clip.
Is blurring or pixelating text safe?
Not always. Pixelated text has been reconstructed by software more than once, because a pixelated letter averages to a predictable pattern. For a number plate, an account number, an address or a password, use Black Out, which leaves nothing to recover.
Does Talk upload my video to blur it?
No. Finding and following what you tapped runs on the iPhone, and the blur is rendered there. If you later send the clip to AI Video, the parts you hid are hidden in what is sent too, and so are faces if Face Blur is on.
Is Tap to Blur free?
Yes, on both Talk’s free tier and Pro, as Face Blur is. It needs Talk 2.5 or later. Free exports are 1080p with no watermark.
