How to make a video longer on iPhone

By Efficient Compute LTD, the developer of Talk · Updated

For a second or two, slow the clip down: at 0.8× a 10-second clip runs 12.5 seconds, and footage without speech rarely gives it away. For more, add footage rather than stretch it. A held frame or a loop costs nothing but is easy to spot. To add seconds that were never filmed — the camera keeps moving, the waves keep rolling — AI can extend the shot from its last frame. In Talk that is AI Video’s Extend a clip, which adds 3 to 10 seconds at a time, on Talk Pro.

Four ways, and what each looks like

Method Adds What viewers see Cost
Slow it down 25% at 0.8×, double at 0.5× Natural for movement without speech; obvious on a voice Free in Talk and iMovie
Hold a frame As long as you like A still picture, which reads as deliberate at the end of a clip Free in Talk and iMovie
Loop or reverse it A copy of the clip each time A visible repeat, unless the motion loops on its own Free in Talk and iMovie
Extend with AI 3, 5, 8 or 10 seconds at a time New footage that carries the shot on Talk Pro, video credits

Without AI

  1. Slow it down In Talk, select the clip, open Speed & Audio, then Speed, and set it below 1×. In iMovie, tap the clip, then the Speed button, and drag the slider toward the tortoise.
  2. Hold a frame In Talk, put the playhead on the frame and tap Freeze, or say “hold this frame for 3 seconds”: it becomes a still of that length, graded like the clip, and everything after it moves along. In iMovie, tap the clip, then Speed, then Freeze.
  3. Loop or reverse it Duplicate the clip so it plays twice, or reverse the copy so the second pass plays backwards, like a boomerang. Both are on the clip’s tools in Talk, or one sentence in the prompt bar.

With AI: extend the shot

  1. Select the clip In Talk, select the clip on the timeline. It has to be at least two seconds long, and not reversed or on a speed ramp.
  2. Open AI Video and choose Extend a clip Describe what happens next if you like — “The camera keeps following her down the street” — or leave it to carry on as it was going. Choose 3, 5, 8 or 10 seconds.
  3. Tap Generate The price in video credits is on the button. Talk sends the last five seconds of the clip, and the new seconds start from its last frame and go right after it on the timeline. Most are ready in one to three minutes.
  4. Extend again if you need more The extension is an ordinary clip, so you can select it and extend it in turn. You can also ask in the prompt bar: “Continue this shot for 5 more seconds with AI”.

An extension is the model’s guess at what came next. It holds best on shots that keep doing one thing — a camera moving through a place, water, traffic, a person walking — and least well on speech, which it can’t continue. Play the join between the clip and the new seconds before you use it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a video longer without it looking slowed down?

Slow it only a little, to about 0.8×, which most footage without speech hides well, or add footage instead of stretching it: a held frame, a second shot, or new seconds made by AI. Slowed speech is the giveaway, so mute it or put music over it.

Can AI make a video longer?

Yes. AI video extension draws new frames that continue the shot from its last frame: the camera keeps moving, the waves keep rolling. In Talk, AI Video’s Extend a clip adds 3, 5, 8 or 10 seconds at a time on Talk Pro, and you can extend the result again.

How long can an AI extension be?

In Talk, 3, 5, 8 or 10 seconds per extension. It reads the last five seconds of the clip, which has to be at least two seconds long, and most extensions are ready in one to three minutes.

Can I make a video longer in the Photos app?

Not directly: Photos can trim a video but not lengthen it. The exception is a video shot in Slo-mo, where you can drag the slow section across more of the clip, which makes it play for longer.

Does looping a video look bad?

Only where the end and the start don’t match. Shots with little movement, or motion that repeats on its own, such as waves or a spinning wheel, loop without a visible jump. A loop of someone talking almost always shows.
